Client

Power & Lighting Systems, needed a reference deck for the 2023 Florida Building Energy Code update (C405.2). The original was a dense, text-heavy document with no visual hierarchy, no brand system, and no way to quickly find what you needed under job-site pressure.

Challenge

Code guides live or die by scannability. The existing deck put every requirement in prose, the same visual weight for a critical threshold as for an exception footnote. There was no brand presence, no data visualization, and no design logic helping a contractor or engineer find the one rule they needed in the middle of a walkthrough.

Opportunity

How might we redesign a technical regulatory deck so it communicates with the clarity of a brand system and works as hard in the field as it does in a training room?

Key Decisions

01

01

Blueprint grid as the visual system

Rather than a generic layout, the grid was derived from photometric measurement diagrams, the same visual logic used in lighting design itself. Every slide carries the texture. It signals precision before the content does.

02

02

Surfaced the numbers first

Critical thresholds (20 min, 50%, 600 ft², 150 W) were pulled out of body copy and given their own slide as oversized data callouts. The goal: a field professional should be able to find the number they need without reading a sentence.

03

03

Color-coded the change logic

The 2020 → 2023 comparison slides use a consistent two-column card system, white for 2020, navy-and-gold for 2023 with gold tags for NEW provisions and steel blue for UPDATED. Eight code changes, scannable in under ten seconds.

04

04

Ported the brand badge system

The numbered circle badges from the PALS pitch deck were extended across space-type grids, parking rule cards, new-code callouts, and the VS comparison badge creating a visual language consistent with how the company already shows up.

05

05

Closed with the brand, not the content

The final slide carries "Honesty. Integrity. Service. Since 1958." at full-bleed type in gold. The deck ends as a brand statement, not a footnote.

Outcome

A 28-slide system that functions as both a live training tool and a field reference built on the same visual language PAL's uses to sell the company, now carrying its most important technical knowledge.
